Call of Duty wouldn't be nearly as successful without its campaigns, with the Modern Warfare series leading the way in this department since its conception.

Bonds were built with the series through all the trials and tribulations of All Ghillied Up, Shepherd's betrayal, Yuri's undercover No Russian massacre, Soap's death in Chernobyl, and Price finally smashing Makarov's face in through the glass ceiling. Modern Warfare's original trilogy was blockbuster throughout.

Yet the rebooted series hasn't matched up, and now after the Modern Warfare 3 Early Access Campaign has aired, high-profile Call of Duty personalities are less than convinced that the story mode still belongs in the franchise.

Call of Duty players call for Campaigns to be axed after Modern Warfare 3

This year, Sledgehammer Games opted for a short and sweet campaign filled with "Combat Missions" which serve akin to Spec Ops missions where you have the freedom to operate in different ways and aren't forced to abide by the strict storyline. But early impressions haven't been at all kind to Modern Warfare 3.

Instead, players and streamers have been less than satisfied with the Campaign's length and quality, and are now calling for the whole story modes to be left behind due to a "waste of dev effort".

Popular Call of Duty personality Jack "CouRage" Dunlop took to social media to say, "I've said it for years. CoD Campaigns are a waste of dev effort and those resources would be so much better used on polishing MP/Warzone."

Instead, CouRage has claimed that there could be more done with the storylines for Warzone, similar to how Verdansk was embedded with missions to tie into an overarching narrative.

"Hell, make the resources go into making an actually cool WZ/MP storyline," he added, which received backing from other streamers like Tyler "TeeP" Polchow.

Should Call of Duty ditch Campaigns going forward?

One fan argued that the campaigns set the tone for the rest of the game, and multiplayer, Warzone, Zombies, and other game modes would all feel out-of-touch if they weren't knitted together by a storyline.

"CoD campaigns are not a waste of dev effort lmfao it’s the foundation of the setting. They aren’t wasting any dev effort. Verdansk is gonna be in Warzone again and the story carries to Warzone as well," argued "HunterTV".

Yet CouRage claims that unless the Campaigns are tripled in size to a 10-12 hour story, then they are better left out.

Interestingly, Black Ops 4 did launch without a Campaign, opting to pour their dev effort into Blackout, which paved the way for the battle royale that we have now... maybe the streamers are onto something after all...
