With Modern Warfare 3 just around the corner, the next instalment of Call of Duty is set to launch on November 10. Overall, the MW3 Beta went down as a tremendous success and gave fans a chance to test out the new arsenal of weapons.

Of course, with the MW3 chapter beginning, it's also nearly time for MW2's to close. While the game will still be accessible for years to come, its live service life-cycle will soon be over.

The first nail in the coffin seems to have been hammered in by Activision, as the Modern Warfare 2 Vault Edition is no longer available to purchase. While sad in one way, it does mean the cosmetics that came with that bundle are now a lot more rare.

Modern Warfare 2 Vault Edition has been axed by Activision

Taking to Twitter on October 16, popular Call of Duty account CharlieINTEL revealed that Activision has removed Modern Warfare 2's Vault Edition from all digital stores.

As a result, only the Standard Edition of MW2 is available to purchase from now on. It's unclear why Activision has made this decision, but it's possible it's to avoid confusion between the MW2 and MW3 Vault Editions.

It's worth noting that the MW2 Vault Edition only included extra cosmetics and blueprints, so the Vault Edition being axed doesn't lock off any gameplay content.

However, it does mean those who now own the MW2 Vault Edition cosmetics now have rarer skins that you'll likely see less and less. This is especially important given that MW2 skins are carrying over to MW3, so make sure to show them off if you own them.

What was included in the MW2 Vault Edition?

It's been a while since the Modern Warfare 2 Vault Edition was originally released, so you'd be forgiven for forgetting what it even included.

Similar to MW3's Vault Edition, it featured a set of exclusive cosmetics and, of course, some weapon blueprints as well. Here's a full rundown:

  • Red Team 141 Operator Pack (Ghost, Farah, Price & Soap - All wearing special masked outfits)
  • FJX Cinder Weapon Vault

While the removal of MW2's Vault Edition is unlikely to affect many members of the community, it may be good news for those who were able to pick it up ahead of MW3.
