While it's hard to pinpoint exactly when Call of Duty's 'Fortnitification' kicked in, it's become a recurring gripe of mil-sim players that the war-based shooter they once loved has become a playbox of pop culture crossovers.

We'll admit that adding Cheech and Chong alongside a marijuana-themed sloth might be a particular low for the series that once tried to be somewhat historically accurate, but with everything from Rambo to the Terminator, Snoop Dogg to Nicki Minaj shooting up the battlefield, we'll admit that the devs are at least imaginative.

Modern Warfare 3 fans look back on the best (and worst) collabs

Even though we're not quite there yet, it'll soon be time for Modern Warfare 3 to punch its card for the last time. The annual turn and burn of CoD games allows for a brief window of crossover before this year's game cannibalises the last, so before long, Black Ops 6 will be overshadowing MW3.

We're all a bit misty-eyed that MW3 might not have long left, and although we're expecting there will at least be a Season 6 to follow the upcoming Season 5, we'll have to wait and see. Season 5 is getting in the ring with a WWE crossover, while it also looks like 2024's The Crow reboot will also be spreading its wings.

Players are now looking back at the good and the bad of MW3's collabs, with @DETONATED asking what our favourites were. There's an impressive list that's covered everything from Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two to The Walking Dead, the NBA to the many, many, crossovers with The Boys.

One fan wrote, "It keeps changing for me. Right now I'm thinking GxK just because the bundles were dope but at the same time the boys had 3 events 2 giving alright camos," while another added, "The Warhammer MODE was so good The Boys were also good tho."

Despite complaints we perhaps had too much content based on The Boys, the addition of Supe abilities definitely mixed things up (for better or for worse). There's not much love for the Fallout collab, but with Task Force 141 getting some Vault Dweller-inspired outfits, it wasn't exactly the overhaul we asked for.

There's also plenty of disdain for The Walking Dead collab, with players being particularly vocal on how Sledgehammer Games has largely abandoned Zombies in MW3. Chucking in some Operators based on Rick Grimes and Michonne was never going to fix that, with TWD collab coming across as a cheap cash-in

Black Ops 6 looks to be taking a different route, with Treyarch promising a back-to-basics approach that might lean more into realism. The Carry Forward system also isn't coming with us, so unless you like playing Warzone, Homelander and co. are sadly being left with MW3. Still, we'd love for Black Ops 6 to give us a Resident Evil crossover. Come on Treyarch, make it happen.
