Call of Duty continues to plummet as THE FINALS obliterates Steam player count

As Call of Duty limps back into its pen like an old wartorn horse, there is an abundance of new thoroughbreds galloping over the hurdles of the shooter game genre, and now CoD looks almost set to hang up the hooves as yet another game has knocked it further down the pecking order.

Despite Warzone's new Urzikstan map, the Call of Duty battle royale failed to get itself back on top of the viewership charts last week, with Fortnite ruling the kingdom with a LEGO fist.

And now CoD has lost its reign as the shooter game with the highest player count - on PC at least - at THE FINALS' surprise launch has blown the genre away.

Unlike Call of Duty's latest launch, Modern Warfare 3, the reviews for THE FINALS have been absolutely glowing, with over 20,000 of them being written by fans online; in comparison, MW3 was judged to be so bad that fans even review-bombed the original title.

THE FINALS also smashed some pretty solid numbers on Steam too, amassing over 200,000 players in the first 24 hours of being live, peaking at 221,000 the following day.

In comparison, Modern Warfare 3 only peaked at 140k on Steam so far.

Is Call of Duty in trouble following THE FINALS launch?

Of course, Call of Duty isn't in dire straights even though the success of THE FINALS on Steam has already made it more popular than Modern Warfare 3. 

For Call of Duty, the majority of PC players now use Battle.net, where Activision has made its own platform the key hub of Call of Duty HQ.

The two-decade-long series could also be soon set to move to the Epic Games Store, allowing more fans to easily access the plethora of titles under its wing. 

Its safe to say that Call of Duty will still continue to dominate on console too - Fortnite aside - and it will take a monumental game to shift that.

For THE FINALS though, its widely popular start has been very impressive and filled the void that was left by the non-existent XDefiant.
