Many games nowadays are moving with the times and ditching last-gen releases to favour optimisation for the Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 5.

Even in the shooter genre, VALORANT console has abandoned hopes of last-gen support and relied on its graphics and mechanics to flourish on the best-performing hardware that is available. But as Call of Duty has stayed loyal to the old guard ahead of Black Ops 6, the community has praised the decision.

Much of the Call of Duty community grimaced at the sight of Black Ops 6 landing on Xbox One and PS4, although it was glossed over as the new Treyarch title posed such promise with a wealth of new features.

But as Black Ops 6 nears, many are reflecting on the decision with praise, claiming that it's a good choice not to price out so many players from the new annual release. While stocking issues with new-gen consoles have largely been resolved, there's still a massive chunk of the playerbase botting up their PS4 and Xbox One.

Taking to Reddit, one fan claimed, "The games run at 60 fps on last gen. Half of the player base is still on last gen. It'd be stupid of them not to make last gen versions."

"The engine is pretty versatile, the biggest difference between current and last generation is resolution and loading times, otherwise it is pretty comparable, especially for consoles released back in 2013," a second fan added.

Some did question the need to support consoles that are 11 years old and wondered if Call of Duty could be much more optimised if it went current-gen only. Given Xbox's Game Pass release too, there will be far more opportunity for players of all income levels to access this year's CoD from the start.

"As much as I wish current gen was prioritised, far too many people are still on past gen for them to just not be included," a third fan echoed.

The Black Ops 6 beta is quickly approaching, with the CoD Next showcase coming at the end of August, and it's obvious that players can't wait to sink their teeth into whatever dish Treyarch has been cooking.
