Assassin's Creed Fan Creates Helpful Franchise Timeline

The Assassin's Creed games are spread extensively far across history. Sometimes, it can be hard to keep track. We don't know what's coming after the cliffhanger events of 2020's Valhalla, but rest assured, this isn't the end of the story for the Order of the Assassins.

One very helpful Assassin's Creed fan has created a handy timeline detailing which time period each game is set in - starting with Odyssey and ending with Syndicate. So, for any Assassins who have considered playing the game series in historical order, this timeline is perfect for you. 

What Is The Historical Timeline For The Assassin's Creed Games?

Since the first Assassin's Creed was released in 2007, the historical order of the game franchise has been hard to grasp for some. Especially given the addition of eleven more main games and an abundance of spin-offs. However, redditor u/Chapere, has made things a whole lot easier by creating a timeline featuring the 12 main games and the historical period in which they principally take place.

According to the post, the Assassin's Creed historical timeline is as follows: Odyssey (431–422 BC), Origins (49–43 BC), Valhalla (872–878 AD), the first Assassin’s Creed (1191), Assassin's Creed II (1459-1499), Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood (1499-1507), Assassin's Creed: Revelations (1511), Black Flag (1715), Rogue (approx. 1756–1763), Assassin’s Creed 3 (1754-1783), Unity (1789-1794), and Syndicate (1868-1916).

The timeline doesn't take into account the modern-day settings of the majority of Assassin's Creed games, in which the plot switches back-and-forth between the past and present thanks to the effects of the Animus. Not to mention, its various spin-off games, such as Assassin's Creed III: Liberation and Chronicles, have not been included. The timeline will prove useful for any new Assassin's Creed players trying to get to grips with the context of the franchise, or any pros who fancy doing a chronological playthrough.

Other forms of Assassin's Creed media - like the various art books and novels out there - are also excluded from the list. This includes the 2016 film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender, but given the film's unfavourable reception, it's no surprise Assassin's Creed supporters are eager to distance the game from the movie. Remembering a highly-anticipated Assassin's Creed TV series is currently under development from Netflix, it might one day fit the timeline.
